Introduction - SD cards

SD memory cards are an extremely popular and versatile storage medium. They are used in a wide range of devices, such as:

  • Cameras: A camera SD card is used to store high-resolution photos, 4K videos, and other multimedia. It allows photographers and filmmakers to work freely without worrying about running out of space for files.
  • Phones: An SD card for a phone allows you to expand the device's memory, which is especially important for models with limited internal memory. The SD card can store photos, videos, music, applications and other data.
  • Cameras: An SD card for a camera records high-resolution videos, providing smooth and clear image quality. High-capacity cards allow you to record long videos without having to empty the card frequently.
  • Tablets: A memory card for a tablet can be used to store additional applications, games, videos, music and other files. This allows users to enjoy more entertainment and functionality on their devices.

Unfortunately, SD cards are susceptible to damage and data loss. They can be formatted, deleted, physically damaged, or lost due to human error. In such situations, SD card data recovery can be extremely important.

What is an SD card?

The history of SD cards began in 1999, when SanDisk, Toshiba and Panasonic joined forces to create a new standard for data carriers. The main goal was to create a compact and universal format that could replace larger and less efficient memory cards, such as CompactFlash.

The SD memory card was created as a result of these activities.

The SD (Secure Digital) memory card is a small, portable data carrier that is used to store various types of files, such as photos, videos, music, documents and applications. SD cards are available in various sizes and capacities, which allows them to be tailored to the individual needs of the user.

Popular SD card capacities:
  • 32GB SD Card: Perfect for storing photos, music, and documents.
  • 64GB SD Card: Great for users who need more space for high-resolution photos and videos.
  • 128GB SD Card: Perfect for storing large amounts of data, such as 4K movies and games.
  • 256GB SD Card: The choice for professionals who need space to store massive amounts of data, such as RAW photos and 8K videos.
  • 512GB SD Card: Maximum capacity for SDHC cards, ideal for applications requiring large storage space.
  • 1TB SD Card: The next generation of SDXC cards, offering huge capacity for the most demanding users.

Types of SD memory cards:
  • SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) card: supports capacities from 4 GB to 32 GB.
  • SDXC (Secure Digital Extended Capacity) card: supports capacities from 32 GB to 2 TB.
  • SDUC (Secure Digital Ultra Capacity) card: supports capacities from 2 TB to 128 TB.

Applications of SD memory cards:
  • SD card in camera: Stores high-resolution photos and videos.
  • SD card in phone: Expands your phone's storage capacity, allowing you to store more apps, photos, music, and other data.
  • SD card in camera: Records high-resolution videos for smooth, clear images.

SD Memory Card Data Loss - Causes and Solutions

SD memory cards are extremely popular and useful storage media. They are used to store photos, videos, music, documents and other files in various devices such as cameras, phones, camcorders, tablets and game consoles. Unfortunately, these cards are susceptible to damage and data loss.

Data loss from an SD memory card can occur for a variety of reasons. The most common are:

  • Physical damage: The card may have been damaged mechanically, such as by being dropped, exposed to liquid, crushed, or overheated. Cracking the casing, destroying the contacts, or damaging internal components may prevent data from being read.
  • Logical damage: The card's file system may have been corrupted due to software errors, a power failure, or improper removal of the card from the device. Damage to the data structure may prevent access to files.
  • Formatting: The card may have been formatted accidentally or intentionally, which will erase all data. Low-level formatting can overwrite data on the card, making it unrecoverable.
  • Human errors: Accidentally deleting files or formatting the card are common causes of data loss.
  • Wear and tear: Over time, SD cards can wear out, which can lead to data loss.

What to do if you lose data from your SD card?

Fortunately, there are many ways to recover data from your SD card. Here are a few:

  • Data recovery software: There are many programs that can help you recover data from your SD card. Popular programs include: StrongRecovery, Disk formatting, Photo Recovery, Data Recovery.
  • Professional data recovery services: If recovering your data yourself fails, you can use the services of companies that specialize in data recovery. These services can be expensive, but they may be your only option if your card is severely damaged.

Do-it-yourself data recovery - what can you do?

Data loss can happen to anyone. A damaged hard drive, accidental deletion of files, or even a virus attack – these are just some of the reasons that can lead to the loss of valuable information. In such situations, it is worth knowing what steps you can take to recover your data yourself.

Here are some tips that might help:

1. Identify the cause of data loss.

The first step is to identify the cause of data loss. This will help you choose the right recovery method.

2. Do not save new data on the medium from which the data was lost.

Overwriting lost data may make it impossible to recover it.

3. Try data recovery software.

There are many data recovery programs available on the market, both free and paid. Some of them are very easy to use and can help recover data even for people without much technical experience.

Recovering data from an SD memory card using StrongRecovery

Before you start anything, remember the following rules:

  • The most important thing is not to overwrite the data after losing it, i.e. not to write anything to the card, not to format it, not to modify files
  • It is important to recover all important data to us in another place, check it (open the files) and only then freely use the SD card
  • Remember that you can download a trial version of the program StrongRecovery to see what the situation is and recover a few files for trial!

Step 1

Run StrongRecovery and from the list select the disk (SD card) where the data was lost. If a partition has been lost on the card and you cannot select a drive with a file system or a letter assigned to this card, proceed as in the article: Partition Recovery.

Step 2

After selecting the card, the program starts analyzing. It is possible to browse the visible directory structure and recover interesting data while the program is running (scanning the SD card), you can also use the thumbnail mode (Menu -> View or the F12 key).

SD Card Data Recovery - view files and folders as thumbnails

Step 3

Now you can select files and folders from your card to recover them - via the "Recover" option from the main menu or the context menu of the file list (right mouse button). Then you will have to select the target directory for the data to be copied from the memory card, select the disk to which you want to transfer them, remember, the disk should be designated for data transfer (without the risk of overwriting/destroying previously lost or deleted files):

Step 4

StrongRecovery also scans the card for raw files - RAW (files to be recovered +). If the scanning process is completed or RAW files are found to a satisfactory degree (photos or other multimedia), then they can be dumped/recovered. RAW files are searched for by detecting header information (file format), this is done independently of the file system, so in the event of file system corruption or loss of file data (allocation data, name, date, attributes), it is possible to recover them.

Summary and description of additional methods supporting SD Card Data Recovery

As you can see, recovering data from memory cards using data recovery program is very simple and does not require any specialist knowledge from you. StrongRecovery allows you to use many different functions to support the data recovery process depending on your needs.

If you want your data on the SD card to be safe (in the event of a card failure), you can create an image of it (an exact copy of the card stored in a file called a disk image). The image created in this way is now a "card" that you can open as a file in the program.

A microSD card or other memory card is a medium on which some photos are very often stored. StrongRecovery is an easy and convenient solution for recovering photos. You can see each photo as its thumbnail - this way you can see what you can recover. It is also possible to recover RAW photos with greater efficiency thanks to the use of proprietary and comprehensive algorithms for identifying this type of photos.

StrongRecovery also supports the recovery of AVCHD movies (MTS files), which are often recorded on memory cards. See the article on how to recover files if you want to do it quickly and effectively.

Sometimes you want to recover data that you can't find. A file search engine comes to your aid. Type "*.JPG" in the upper right corner of the browser to find all the JPG files the program was able to find (the program will collect everything it finds in different ways into a results list).

Why is StrongRecovery so effective in recovering data from microSD Cards and other Memory Cards?

StrongRecovery has comprehensive data detection methods and many other important features, thanks to which it is possible to successfully and more effectively recover data from microSD Cards:

  • Proprietary File Detection Algorithm at the file system level, which is characteristic of SD Cards (FAT32, FAT16, EXFAT)
  • Additional File Detection Algorithm at the file system level (a general algorithm with high effectiveness, which strengthens the matching of data to the file of the previous algorithm or works effectively on its own)
  • Detection at the File Signature level, which is a useful alternative in the event of damage file system or data loss in this layer
  • Support for many Additional Formats outside the file system, unmatched by competitors (especially in the professional version)

Generally speaking, StrongRecovery has the following capabilities:

  • Supports all known card brands, i.e.: SanDisk, Samsung, Kingston, Goodram, Lexar, Transcend and others
  • It allows you to restore various types of photos, movies, documents from the most commonly used cards, i.e. microSD and other memory cards (xD, CF, MS)
  • It allows you to recover data after formatting, classic file deletion or after unexpected data corruption
  • It is child's play to use thanks to its user-friendly interface

In addition, it is worth mentioning that:

  • StrongRecovery has a simple and functional file search engine, where you can also find files by data
  • StrongRecovery has been useful to many users in unusual, crisis situations. One such case was the story of the deletion of data from the card of Mr. Wacław from Krakow by the Russian border guard. Data was recovered in the expected way using StrongRecovery, while many other programs did not give such results
  • It is possible to make a safe copy of the card, using the option to create an image, which is supported by special algorithms for handling damaged blocks. The copy is created in a file, which can be saved anywhere and then used as a "CARD"

How to avoid losing data from an SD memory card?

You already know how to recover photos from a damaged phone, camera or camera memory card. However, before you install a data recovery program, pay attention to a few important rules. If you suspect that the data carrier has failed, immediately remove it from the device. Continued use of a damaged SD card can lead to overwriting the files - as a result, they will not be restored later.

To avoid losing data from your SD card, here are a few simple rules to follow:

  • Back up your data regularly: Regularly backing up your SD card data to your computer or to the cloud is the best way to protect your data from loss.
  • Use secure formatting: When formatting your SD card, select Quick formatting. Full formatting can permanently erase data from your card.
  • Protect your SD card from physical damage: Don't expose your SD card to extreme temperatures, moisture, or shock.
  • Use antivirus software: Viruses can encrypt or erase data from your card.
  • Don't delete files you're not sure you want to delete: Make sure you know what you want to delete before deleting them from your SD card. Deleted files can be difficult to recover.

By following these simple rules, you can minimize the risk of losing data from your drive.
